Dear Sunny Questions
Dear Sunny,
Any advice as a natural health advocate for something we can all do
to help the environment?
— Mindful in McMurray
Good question, Mindful. Herbs and supplements are not often though of
as being helpful to the environment. Let me explain:
Did you know that Americans fill more than 3 billion prescriptions a
year? These drug residues end up on our lakes and rivers.. Hospitals and
nursing homes flush away unused and expired prescriptions and consumers
are told to do the same. Not to mention the medications that pass
through the pill taker without being absorbed.
In drought conditions, rivers and streams provide less water for aquatic
life, making the drugs more concentrated, bringing more detrimental
effects. Antidepressants have been found in the liver and brain of
catfish. Ibuprofen, steroids and antibiotics block fin regeneration in
fish. What effect this will have on humans remains to be seen.
My advice would be to use as few pharmaceuticals as possible. Ask if
your pharmacy will take back unused or expired drugs. Request that they
begin a program to dispose of them safely. Try to use natural remedies
whenever possible with the guidance of your health care provider.
How about Heartburn Free instead of that purple pill? It works just as
well and is made from citrus. Skip the drugstore painkiller and match
your symptoms to a non-toxic homeopathic remedy. They are effective and
better for your stomach and liver too! Why rush out for an antibiotic
for cold and flu? Use colloidal silver, Esberitox or Sambucol instead,
to name a few. The list is endless. The staff at Sunny Bridge will be
happy to direct you to the products you need.
Don't discontinue use of any medications without consulting your doctor.
Sometimes prescriptions ARE necessary and very appropriate. But for the
sake of your own health and the health of the planet, try the natural
solutions whenever you can.
Beaming with Health,
Sunny
